Welcome! OCOM is committed to promoting diversity in healthcare. Diversity in healthcare can result in reduction in care disparities, improved care delivery, and overall increased access to healthcare. At OCOM, we value leadership, and lead by working to enhance social justice through our commitment to inclusive and diverse access to education and health care.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is one of seven key initiatives in the college’s Strategic Plan for 2022-2027: "OCOM will be a respectful, safe, supportive, and welcoming organization and community for all students, faculty, staff, and patients. Special attention will be paid to meeting the needs of members of those communities that have been historically marginalized and/or underrepresented."

Current Efforts

  • Offering workshops for OCOM students, staff, and faculty regarding implicit bias in healthcare and inclusive clinic design with the goal to increase awareness and inform the OCOM community on the importance of embracing diverse perspectives, fostering equitable treatment, and creating a supportive and inclusive community.
  • Integrating respectful touch and trauma-informed care practices into the OCOM curriculum. Touch is fundamental to the human experience, and is a way to convey empathy and compassion while also creating bonds with patients. Teaching future healers to incorporate touch in an ethical manner is crucial to the healing experience.
  • Continued partnerships with cultural organizations such as Lan Su Chinese Garden, Portland Chinatown Museum, Kam Wah Chung, and others.
  • Sliding scale pricing at our OCOM clinic, including reduced price acupuncture for college students, active duty military, veterans, senior citizens (65 and older), and individuals receiving SSD/I, WIC or SNAP upon showing valid ID.
  • Partnering with Fora Health and Cascadia Behavioral Health - Garlington Clinic to offer healing acupuncture and qigong to their patients.

  • Stay tuned! More events coming soon.
