What's New in Alumni Relations

GIOVANNI COMES TO PORTLAND

Dear Fellow Alumni,

Welcome to the magical month of December!  This will not only be the first in an ongoing series of Alumni Bulletins about Continuing Education opportunities and OCOM alumni events, but also my holiday greeting to all of you.
‘Bulletins’ will appear monthly or semi-monthly, and will be distinguished from the quarterly online Alumni Newsletter by the brevity of their content.

This month, I would like to share with you some photos taken when Giovanni Maciocia, well-known author of several textbooks on Traditional Chinese Medicine, presented his two-day seminar on the ‘Eight Extraordinary Vessels’ on November 1 and 2, 2008.

The 110 professionals and 37 students seated for Giovanni’s lectures in PSU Smith Hall Ballroom provided this seminar with the best attendance record in OCOM’s history of continuing education courses.  The lectures were rated as being of ‘intermediate to advanced level’ by most of those attending the seminar.

From a practitioner’s perspective, the lecture introduction alone provided a wealth of in-depth information on functions and energetics of the Eight Vessels, appropriate clinical usage, dynamics of opening and coupling points, understanding Eight Vessel pulses, and diagnosing Eight Vessel pathologies.  Giovanni expanded upon his introduction with specific information about individual vessel pathways and further clinical applications.

Also available in the lecture hall were tables with information about OCOM’s doctoral program and the newly formed state association, the OAAOM.

Secondly, the next continuing education programs on the horizon are lectures on ‘Women’s Pathology and Therapy in Early Medieval China’ on January 24, 2009 and ‘Cosmology, Philosophy, and Medicine: Pre-natal Care in Early Medieval China’ on January 25, 2009 given by Sabine Wilms, PhD.  Dr. Wilms is one of the few continuing education speakers who is not only fluent in modern Chinese language, but is also fully conversant with ancient Chinese characters and medical texts.

Further information about content of the January 24 and 25, 2009 lectures is available in the continuing education portion of the OCOM website. Seating for these lectures will be limited, due to Dr. Wilms’ preference for interactive learning environments.  Sign up early!

I wish you peace and happiness in 2009,
