Tobacco-free Campus Policy
The Oregon College of Oriental Medicine is Tobacco-Free
The American Lung Association of Oregon reports [1] that tobacco use is the number one preventable cause of death in the United States. Second-hand (or “passive”) smoke alone has been directly linked to the deaths of over 53,000 adults each year – including 800 Oregonians. It has long been OCOM’s intention to provide students, staff, faculty, and visitors with an environment and the resources by which to optimize their health and well-being. In accordance with this philosophy, as well as the convincing evidence of the negative effects of tobacco use and second-hand smoke, it is the policy of the college that the OCOM campus shall remain completely tobacco-free.
The campus includes both the college and clinic buildings, all surrounding grounds, and all OCOM designated parking areas. Parking and public areas directly adjacent to campus buildings and grounds should also be considered tobacco free. It is the responsibility of each OCOM employee or student to ensure that his/her visitor(s) comply with all the provisions of this policy.
While all employees, students, and visitors are expected to abide by the terms of this policy, OCOM wishes to maintain and foster respectful, humane relationships. In that regard, any concerns or comments about the Tobacco-Free Campus Policy should be brought to the attention of the following individuals:
- Students should see Nancy Grotton, Director of Student and Alumni Affairs
- Staff, faculty, and college visitors should see Stephen McLeod, Director of Human Resources
- Clinic patients and visitors should see Sheryle Broehl-Spears, Clinic Office Manager
For information on tobacco use cessation and ways in which OCOM can help you achieve that goal, please contact the Director of Human Resources.
